As part of this year’s celebration, the Greek PDC (members) is
organizing a one-day symposium featuring a series of seminars and presentations focused on the technical, creative, and professional aspects of the production designer’s role. The event is open to the public and welcomes industry professionals, collaborators, students, and film enthusiasts.

MAKERS OF ILLUSION – SFX | AI | 3D IN PRODUCTION DESIGN

The first part will feature guest production designer/art director Eggert Ketilsson from Iceland, who will give a presentation on the integration of special effects into the visual language of production design.

The second part will address the increasing need for professionals to stay informed about emerging technologies and digital tools that are shaping the future of the craft. These technologies can be used as new instruments of design.

After the scheduled discussions, there will be a casual drinks reception for all participants and invited guests.

The following topics will be explored:

1.The blending of Production Design & SFX
Masterclass by Eggert Ketilsson

From his work on films like Interstellar, Tenet, and Dunkirk, Eggert Ketilsson uniquely combines the roles of Art Director and Special Effects Supervisor. In this discussion, he shares insights into the challenges of working as an SFX supervisor in collaboration with other production designers, and how his dual expertise allows him to better shape the final visual result.

2. AI & Production Design. Usage and Challenges | Possibilities and Limits
Presentation by Nikos Stamboulopoulos

A discussion on the use of AI in production design as a tool for inspiration and creation. The presentation explores AI’s design language and practical applications, while also addressing the legal and ethical implications of AI integration in film production workflows.

3. 3D Printing & Set Construction. Materials | Techniques
Presentation by Markos Gavalas

3D printing has become an established method for producing objects and surfaces to meet set design needs. This session will cover materials, techniques, digital workflows, and production timelines in 3D fabrication for the screen industries.

4. CNC cutting. Materials | Techniques
Presented by Jason Giraud

CNC cutting is now a widely used tool in set design. This presentation focuses on the machine’s possibilities, design workflow, and output results—highlighting how designers can gain greater control over outcomes through a solid understanding of material limits and technical parameters.
