An opportunity for students of any subject in the University of Westminster to drop in and find out more about the wonderful world of film and tv production design. The session will introduce students to the art department which includes illustrators, concept artists, drafts people, carpenters, set decorators, graphic designers, VFX, scenic painters and more. Production design is fundamental to visual storytelling, and this session will introduce students to what it is and its relevance to understanding and making media.

The event is organized by Jane Barnwell, Reader in Moving Image at the University of Westminster. She began her career at the BBC, before working freelance in production. Jane has published articles for journals and periodicals including The Guardian, The Scenographer, International Journal of Production; Costume Design, Journal of British Cinema and Television and The Conversation.

She has authored books including “Production Design for Screen; Visual Story- telling in Film and TV” (2017, Bloomsbury), “Production Design: Architects of the screen”, (2004, Columbia University Press) and “The Fundamentals of Film Making” (2008, AVA publishing). Jane’s latest publication explores the signifi- cance of the design of the home on screen, “Production Design; the Cinematic Home”, (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022).
